I’m trying to stay afloat, stay informed, and say no to doomscrolling. These are some habits that have somewhat helped my mental health lately:
- Stick to 1 national + 1 local news source without endless scrolling feeds. (Newspaper homepage, daily newsletter, podcast…)
- Try to read them once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Even better if there’s something else coming up on my calendar - a guardrail between me and the abyss. But really give proper attention to what’s going on - this is about awareness, not avoidance. Unless it’s after 8 PM.
- If the headline conceals an article’s actual subject, it’s probably not newsworthy in the first place. If they do this a lot, it means the publisher’s whole strategy is to make readers angry or scared.
- Upgrade from ASMR to Hypnosis videos for sleep or anxiety attacks.
- Spend more money on therapy and psychiatry than on groceries 🫠
